Group Training

The National Community Boats Association Certificate in Community Boat Management.

The Thames and Kennet Narrowboat Trust runs a number of weekend courses designed to offer students the National Community Boats Association Certificate in Community Boat Management.

If you already have some experience and are thinking of booking our boat, or using a community boat to take young people or other groups on the water anywhere in the United Kingdom this is the nearest you will get to a national standard. The course is recognised by most uniform groups and local authorities and is designed to give the student an insight not only into boat handling and safety but every aspect of managing groups afloat.

Our courses operate from a Friday to a Sunday evening, we are able to take a group of four people at any one time, and the price includes log book, certificate fees, and full on-board lodging and catering. Small groups such as this enable every participant to have hands on experience and one to one time with our qualified trainers.

For a list of dates, or to discuss booking a complete course for your organisation, please contact our bookings office on 0870 385 0180.

For further details of the programme please contact our voluntary training officer Julie Myers on 07798 911978 or email myersj@hotmail.co.uk

For those people with no or limited experience, the trust offers familiarisation trips which are an essential requirement before booking our boat with a skipper. For self skippered trips we require 2 crew members to hold a current CCBM or Girlguiding narrowboat qualification

We also run a Girlguiding narrowboat qualification weekend, please email Julie Myers for details.

“We had a lovely Easter weekend on Falcon Adam. It was great to have the opportunity to build on our skills on an unfamiliar canal and boat. She is very well equipped and maintained and is obviously a familiar sight to local boaters several of whom spoke to us as we passed to ask how the new engine was going!”
